Agapanthia asphodeli, a species widely distributed in Mediterranean region, has been described from Bordeaux environs (France) as Lamia asphodeli
by Pierre-André Latreille in 1804 [✱].
Its subspecies A. (Epoptes) renatae, endemic to Greece, was firstly collected in Karistena environs
(N37°29′10″ E22°00′30″, 450-550 m a.s.l.; Arkadias Nomos, Peloponnese, Greece) by Siegfried Steiner on May 4, 1998. It was later described by Siegfried Steiner ans Herbert Schmid
as a separate species - Agapanthia (Epoptes) renatae Steiner & Schmid, 2013 [❖]. The taxon, belonging to the Agapanthia (Epoptes) asphodeli (Latreille, 1804)
species cluster [✮], was downgraded to the subspecies level by Maxim A. Lazarev in 2023 [✳].

The depicted mounted beetle was collected in Kalyvia Skotanis (Καλύβια Σκοτανη) village environs (N37°49′52″ E22°04′05″;
460 m a.s.l.; Achaea, Peloponnese, Greece) on May 12, 2017. The living beetles were collected in: (DR) - Germa (Γέρμα) village near Neo Itylo (Mani municipality, Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece) on May 22, 2022;
(PJ) - Mandra (Μάνδρα) environs (Abdera municipal unit, Xanthi regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, NE Greece) on the host plant (Asphodelus microcarpus)
on March 31, 2014.
