Agapanthia hirsuticornis, rare and endemic representative of Iranian entomofauna in appearance resembling Agapanthia kirbyi (Gyllenhal, 1817), was described by Carolus Holzschuh in 1975 from one male collected in Mazandaran in 1933 [❖]. Notwithstanding the first-look similarity to A. kirbyi (densely pubescent elytra and very large hairbrush on antennae), this species was included by Denis Kasatkin into the newly established subgenus Mirabilinia in 2020 [✧].
The new subgenus differs from all other Agapanthia subgenera by a combination of the following characters: strongly zonal coloration of the main pubescence of body and legs; sparse and more fine puncturation of the elytra; the elongated lower lobe of eyes; the structure of the endophallus, the clavate parameres; and the strongly elongated manubrium of tegmen [✧].
Body length: 15 - 23 mm Life cycle: 1 year Adults in: May - June Host plant: undetermined Apiaceae Distribution: an endemic species to Iran
The depicted mounted beetle was collected in Kamyaran (كامياران) environs (Kordestan province, West Iran) on June 2, 2010. The living specimens were photographed in Iran.
