Conizonia allardi allardi, a nominotypical subspecies occurring in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, has been described as Conizonia Allardi from Lambessa environs (Algeria) by Léon Fairmaire in 1866 [❖]. Larvae of C. allardi allardi develop in the roots of Carthamus pinnatus. The female lays eggs on or near the stem. Newborn larvae enter directly into the root or at the junction of a leaf protuberance. The enter hole is then plugged with sawdust, which appears as the diameter of the larval gallery increases. The larva then feed inside the root and gradually enlarges the diameter of the gallery as it moves back and forth. At the end of its development, the inside of the root is completely consumed and hollow. Pupation and the hatching of the adults take place in the soil close to the host plant. In infested plants, we can observe the desiccation of some of their leaves. Adults, active from mid-February to May, can be found under the basal leaves or on stems of the host plant where they mate.
