Hypoeschrus dallonii, an African species occuring also in Algeria, Libya and Morocco, has been described from Tibesti Mts. (Chad) as Tibestia Dallonii by Paul de Peyerimhoff de Fontenelle in 1936 [✮]. Larvae of this in Saharan regions of the North Africa relatively common, but not often collected nocturnal species, develop in branches and trunks of dead, dying or weakened Vachellia (old name: Acacia) tree species [✧][▽].
Body length: 11 - 21 mm Life cycle: 2 - 3 years [?] Adults in: April - May and October - November (North Africa) Host plant: Vachellia spp. Distribution: Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauretania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo-Kinshasa, Uganda, Kenya
The depicted mounted female beetle was reared from larvae collected in dead wood of Vachellia tortilis raddiana found in a wadi near Mizda (Hamada al Hamra) 200 km south of Tripoli on June 4, 2004 (detail in the page devoted to Hypoeschrus dallonii biology). The finding represents the first record of this species from Libya [❖]. The mounted male was reared from larva collected 40 km E Zagora (N30°28′04″ W05°27′27″; 884 m a.s.l., Antiatlas, Morocco) on April 30, 2011.Collected by Jean-Claude Ringenbach, Walter Grosser and Petr Jelínek
