Molorchus kiesenwetteri kiesenwetteri, described by Étienne Mulsant and Claudius Rey in 1861 [▽], is not very abundant, but widespread longhorn beetle in Europe. Interesting is, that the species is tied to the cultural landscape - it is mostly collected or reared from larvae found in old gardens, abandoned orchards or former pastures slowly overgrowing by wild fruit trees, hawthorns or wild roses. Larval development in thin, freshly dying twigs of deciduous trees (prefers Rosaceae) with a diameter of up to 1 cm. It can be reared both from dead branches taken from adult living trees and from branches of felled trees. Life-cycle one year, pupation in late summer in wood, adults emerge in the next year from May to June. M. kiesenwetteri kiesenwetteri doesn't visit flowers, but can be beaten from dying or dead branches of host trees and shrubs.
Body length: 4 - 7 mm Life cycle: 1 year Adults in: April - June Host plant: polyphagous in deciduous trees, especially in Rosaceae (Prunus, Rosa, Malus) Distribution: Austria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Russia, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Bosnia and Montenegro
The mounted beetles were reared from larvae found in wild rose (Rosa canina) twigs in Vevčice environs (South Moravia, Czechia) in October 2010. The living specimen was reared from larva found in Prunus armeniaca twing in Znojmo environs (South Moravia, Czechia) in winter 2014.Collected by David Navrátil and Petr Jelínek
