In the Mediterranean region Niphona picticornis is a relatively common and a broadly polyphagous species. Larvae feed in dead branches and trunks of Ficus, Spartium, Castanea, Ulmus, Morus, Punica, Quercus, Sambucus, Laurus, Cercis, Phoenix, Pistacia, Rhamnus, etc. N. picticornis has been described from Draguignan environs (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, France) by Étienne Mulsant in 1839 [❖].
Body length: 10 - 19 mm Life cycle: 2 years Adults in: April - October Host plant: broadly polyphagous species Distribution: whole Mediterranean region (Albania, Balearic Islands, Bulgaria, Corsica, Crete, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia)
The mounted beetles were reared from larvae found in: ♂ - Ceratonia branch 2 km NE of Agios Georgios Pegeias (39 m a.s.l., Paphos district, Cyprus) on April 15, 2022; ♀ - Quercus branch in Cavtat environs (Konavle municipality, Dubrovnik-Neretva county, Dalmatia, Croatia) on July 28-30, 2014.The living specimens were: (TN) - found inside thin branches of Ficus carica on the coast of Agios Leon (Greece) in summer 2014; (PJ) - reared from dead branches of Ficus carica collected in Nin environs (Zadar county, Dalmatia, Croatia) in summer 2013.
