Rhagium sycophanta, the largest and most conspicuous member of the genus Rhagium, has ben described from Vienna environs as Cerambyx Sycophanta by Franz von Paula Schrank in 1781 [▽]. R. sycophanta, a taxon with a wide range of occurrence from Spain to Ural Mts., develops under the bark of stumps or lying trunks with thicker bark and higher humidity. It is a polyphagous species that prefers oaks in Central Europe. Pupation and hatching of beetles under the bark during late summer before the second overwintering, life-cycle 2 years. Adults, active from late April to July (depends on climatic conditions), can be found on host trees and occasionally visit flowering shrubs [▽][❖].

The depicted freshly emerged beetles (MH/ML) were beaten from oaks (Quercus robur) in Žloukovice village environs (Beroun district, Central Bohemia, Czechia) on May 24, 2021. The "older" male specimen with almost lost toment (DR) was found in Bulhary environs (Břeclav district, South Moravia, Czechia) on June 18, 2016
