Stenurella approximans, West-Mediterranean species known from Portugal, Spain and Morocco, has been described from Algeciras environs (Andalusia, Spain) as Strangalia approximans by Wilhelm Gottlob Rosenhauer in 1856 [❖]. The larval biology of the species has not been described, but most likely it will be similar to other species of the genus Stenurella - i.e. development in decaying wood of deciduous and coniferous trees. Adults, active from May to August, are diurnal and anthophilous [✮][▽].
Body length: 9 - 13 mm Life cycle: 2 years Adults in: May - August Host plant: unknown, but most likely similar to other species of the genus Stenurella Distribution: Western Mediterranean area (Portugal, Spain and Morocco)
Mounted beetles were collected on flowers in: ♂/♀A - Oulmes (أولماس) environs (930 m a.s.l., Khémisset province, Middle Atlas Mts., Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, Morocco) on April 16, 2024; ♀B - La Palma del Condado environs (Huelva province, Andalusia, Spain) on May 8, 2010.The living male beetle was collected in Sierra Bermeja (1000 m a.s.l., Málaga province, Andalusia, Spain) on May 9, 2024.
