Rutpela nigra belongs among the common flower-visiting longhorn beetles in Europe. Its larvae develop in the rotten but relatively dry wood of thin branches and trunks of deciduous trees, out of touch with the soil. Quercus, Carpinus, Ulmus, Frangula, Corylus and Betula are specifically indicated, but without a doubt many of other deciduous trees can serve as a host tree. Pupation in the wood in spring and early summer, life-cycle 2 years. Adults, active from May to August, are diurnal and anthophilous [❖][▽].

Genus Stenurella Villiers, 1974 was divided into six subgenera (including nominotypical subgenus) by Hüseyin Özdikmen in 2013 [✧]. Nigrostenurella was then reassigned as a subgenus to the genus Rutpela Nakane et Ohbayashi, 1959 based on molecular and morphometric characters by Andrii M. Zamoroka et al. in 2022 [✳].
