Acanthocinus meyeri, a rare endemic species to Portugal coastal plains pine forests, has been described from Coimbra district by Francesco Vitali in 2011 [▽].
This new taxon could also have been described as a subspecies of Acanthocinus hispanicus Sama & Schurmann, 1979, however,
it should be noted that it is not the level of morphological differentiation that separates two taxa into species or subspecies, but rather biogeographical considerations [▽].
