Cornumutila lineata (Letzner, 1844) is a highly rare representative of the fauna of Palaearctic coniferous forests. In Europe the species occurs in mountainous habitats. The preferred host tree is spruce Picea. However, development in other coniferous trees has been reported as well. Two different niches are occupied by the beetles. In High Tatra (Slovak Republic) the species oviposits into dead wood of wounded living trees. Usually, barkless wounds in trunks are chosen for development. However, in Czech Republic (Hrubý Jeseník) dead tops of living trees are chosen for development. These tops frequently break in storms and fall to the ground. The larval substrate comprises a highly moist red-brown inner wood present both in the wounds and the dead tops of the hosts.
C. lineata, misdetermined for decades as a closely related Siberian taxon Cornumutila quadrivittata (Gebler, 1830) [▽], has been first described from Hrubý Jeseník Mts. (North Moravia, Czechia) as Leptura lineata by Karl Wilhelm Letzner in 1844 [❖].
