Cortodera humeralis humeralis, a nominoctypical subspecies occuring in entire Europe except North and Turkey, is a common Euro-Anatolian taxon of xerothermic oak stands and forest-steppe habitats. The larvae, developing in the surface layer of the soil on the decaying remains (branches, roots, acorns...) of deciduous trees and shrubs, actively move in the soil in search of food. Larvae overwinter in pupal cells built in the soil during autumn and pupate in the spring; life-cycle 1 year. Adults, active from end of April to June, are diurnal and anthophilous. They can be collected in larger number by beating branches of oaks and blosssoming hawthorns [✧][❖].

Cortodera humeralis has been described as Leptura humeralis from Halle environs (Germany) by Johann Gottlob Schaller in 1783 [❖].

Body length:7 - 12 mm
