Iberodorcadion fuliginator, the first scientifically recorded member of Dorcadionini tribe, has been described from Germany as Cerambyx fuliginator by Carl Linné in 1758 [❖]. I. fuliginator is one of only two species of the genus Iberodorcadion occurring outside the Iberian Peninsula and the only one that extends as far as Central Europe. A nominotypical subspecies (I. fuliginator fuliginator), in two basic forms of coloration, belongs in Central-West Europe among endangered and declining beetles thanks to destruction and degradation of its natural habitats [✧]. The females of this xerophilic steppe species lay a single egg in each stem, as close as possible to the grass roots, during warm spring nights. Young larvae immediately leave the stems and get into the soil where they feed on Poaceae roots. Pupation occurs in the soil inside a cocoon made with dead plants and roots mixed with earth in mid-summer of the second year. Life-cycle 2 years [▿].

Body length:10 - 17 mm
Life cycle:2 years
Adults in:April - June
Host plant:roots of grasses (Elymus, Festuca, Hordeum, Triticum)
Distribution:Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain

Depicted mounted beetles were collected in: the ash-grey form (upper picture) - Rouffach environs (323 m a.s.l., Wintzenheim canton, Thann-Guebwiller arrondissement, Haut-Rhin Department, Grand Est Region of France) on April 29, 2018; the striped brown form (lower picture) - Oberbergen environs (400 m a.s.l., Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) on April 28-29, 2018. The living beetle was photographed also in Rouffach environs on April 29, 2018.
