Morimus asper, a striking Cerambycid distributed in South and South-Eastern Europe, has been described from Italy as Cerambyx Asper by Johann Heinrich Sulzer in 1776 [✧]. M. asper gazanchidisi, a subspecies endemic to Thessaly region of Greece, has been described from Mount Ossa (Όσσα; Thessaly, Greece) by Mikhail Danilevsky in 2017 [✮]. This subsepecies looks similar to M. a. ganglbaueri Reitter, 1894, which also has very long antennae and elytra with big black spots. But antennae in M. a. ganglbaueri are usually longer, elytral pubescence distinctly denser, hind elytral spots usually wider, touching elytral margin and covered by granules. The biology of M. asper gazanchidisi is most likely the same as that of the whole M. asper species-cluster.
Body length: ♂♂ 26 - 35 mm / ♀♀ 31 - 34 mm Life cycle: several years Adults in: May - August Host plant: polyphagous in deciduous trees Distribution: a subspecies endemic to Thessaly region of Greece
The depicted mounted beetles were collected in Mount Ossa (Όσσα; Thessaly, Greece on June 10, 2012.Collected by Lech Kruszelnicki
