Neoplagionotus andreui, an interesting and rare endemic species to Iberian Penisula, has been originally described as Plagionotus scalaris var. Andrevi from Alicante environs by José María Fuente in 1908 [▽]. Then José Ignacio López-Colón described a new Plagionotus species under name P. marcae in 1997 [❖]. An incorrect original spelling was later amended, also incorrectly by Eduardo Vives to P. marcorum, but the correct name for the taxon would be P. marcaorum (it was dedicated to the Marca brothers and the rules of the ICZN are clear in this case). Both taxa were considered as valid good species until José Hernández and Juan de la Rosa [✧] studied the Plagionotus larvae and pupae collected in Seseña (Toledo), one of the classic P. marcaorum localities, and related them to P. scalaris. Later Gianfranco Sama (in Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera, 2010), considering that P. scalaris is a species from North Africa, Italy and Greece, assigned all the Iberian populations to P. andreui (a species that would be endemic to the Iberian Peninsula) and leaving P. marcaorum as its a more modern synonym. The last change in the already rich history of naming this species was made by Denis Kasatkin with the establishment of a new genus Neoplagionotus in 2006 [✶], to which taxon andreui belongs.

Larvae of N. andreui, as with some other species of the genus Neoplagionotus, develop in stalks and roots of mallows, specifically in Malva lusitanica (former name Lavatera triloba L.) and Malva olbia (= Lavatera obia) [▴][○].

Body length:9 - 16 mm
Life cycle:1 year
Adults in:June - August
Host plant:Malva lusitanica, Malva olbia (Malvaceae)
Distribution:an endemic species to Iberian Penisula (scattered distribution in the Central and South Spain, Portugal)

The depicted beetles were collected in Las Lomas de Fuensauco environs (4 km S of Valdaracete, Community of Madrid, Spain) on June 23, 2010.
