Paragaurotes doris has been described from Japan as Gaurotes doris by Henry Walter Bates in 1884 [▽]. Paragaurotes doris suvorovi, a subspecies occuring in the Northern part of the species range (from Hokkaido to Sakhalin and Kuril Islands), has been described from Hokkaido as Gaurotes suvorovi by Andrej Petrovitsch Semenov Tian-Shanskij in 1914 [❖]. The subspecies is characterized by a blue coloration of the elytra, a black coloration of the abdomen, tibia and antennae, less often the elytra are greenish, but most importantly, the apical notch of elytra is barely pronounced. In the nominative subspecies, the elytra are usually bronze or greenish, the abdomen is usually red, the antennae and tibiae are partially or almost entirely red and the apical notch of elytra is well pronounced. The larvae of this remarkable taxon develop under the bark of various dead deciduous trees (Acer, Sorbus, Alnus, Quercus, Ulmus, Betula, Salix etc.). Before the second winter, the larvae leave the host tree and ovewintering in the pupal cell created in soil. Pupation in the following May and June, life cycle 2 years. Adults, active from May to August, are diurnal and anthophilous [✧].

The depicted beetle (♀ 12 mm) was collected on the right side of the Severyanka (Северянка) river valley (N44°20′18″ E146°00′42″; 20-40 m a.s.l, Kunashir Island, Kuril Islands, Sakhalin oblast, Far Eastern Federal District, Russia) on July 28, 2013.
