Purpuricenus interscapillatus, a rare taxon occuring in Turkey and Near East, has been originally described from Asia Minor as Purpuricenus budensis v. humeralis by Maurice Pic in 1891 [✧]. But thanks to preoccupation of name humeralis, valid is name Purpuricenus budensis v. interscapillatus published first by Nikolai Nikolaevitch Plavilstshikov in 1937 [✳]. However, it is currently considered a separate species with many subspecies (Rapuzzi P. and Sama G., 2013 [❖]). P. interscapillatus cypriensis, an endemic subspecies to Cyprus, has been described from Pano Panagia environs (Paphos ditrict, Cyprus) by Maxim A. Lazarev and Richard Ambrus in 2021 [✮] P. interscapillatus cypriensis famales oviposit on living terminal twigs of Prunus amygdalus. The larvae girdle the twigs to interrupt flow of sap and develop in the dead part of the twigs.

Body length:11 - 17 mm
Life cycle:at least 2 years
Adults in:June
Host plant:probably polyphagous in deciduous trees, we have demonstrated development in the almond (Prunus amygdalus)
Distribution:an endemic subspecies to Cyprus

Depicted beetles were reared from larvae found in terminal twigs of Prunus amygdalus in Prodromi (Προδρόμι) environs (Paphos district, Cyprus) on April 15, 2022 (beetles emerged on June 9-11, 2022).
