Ropalopus ungaricus olympicus, a rare montane subspecies of South-East Balkan peninsula, has been described from Mount Olympos range (Macedonia, Greece) as Ropalopus insubricus olympicus by Janis Vartanis in 2024 [❖]. The correct subspecies' assignment to the taxon ungaricus was made by Maxim Lazarev in 2024 [✮]. Like all R. ungaricus subspecies, also this taxon is ecologically associated with maples (Acer spp.). The biology of the R. ungaricus complex is similar in all its taxa and is well described in the work (concerning the nominal subspecies) of Martin Rejzek and Karl Hadulla from 2000 [✧].

Given the high number of new subspecies of Ropalopus ungaricus described in recent years from the Mediterranean and their unclear taxonomic validity, there is a need to perform DNA analysis of all "taxa" of the entire group of "maple" ropalop(us)es...

The nominative subspecies Ropalopus ungaricus has been described as Callidium Ungaricum from Hungary by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst in 1784 [✱].

Body length:13 - 17 mm
Life cycle:2 - 3 years
Adults in:May - July
Host plant:maples (Acer spp.)
Distribution:South-East Balkan peninsula (South Bulgaria, North Greece)

The depicted mounted beetles were reared from pupae found in damaged living maple (Acer sp.) trunk 3 km S of Petrich (Петрич; Belasica Mts., Blagoevgrad province, Bulgaria) in June 2021.
