Stenurella melanura is probably the most common and widespread North Palearctic longhorn beetle, occurring in abundance on flowers from the Atlantic (Portugal) to the Pacific Ocean (Russian Far East). S. melanura larvae develop in rotting wood in contact with the soil, also on the root part of the trunks of both deciduous and coniferous trees (Betula, Salix, Acer, Quercus, Crataegus, Pinus, Spruce, Juniperus, etc.). Pupation in food substrate in spring and early summer, life-cycle 2 years. Adults, active from May to September, are diurnal and anthophilous [❖][▽].
Genus Stenurella Villiers, 1974 was divided into six subgenera (including nominotypical subgenus) by Hüseyin Özdikmen in 2013 [✧].
Body length: ♂ ♂ 6 - 11 mm / ♀♀ 7 - 12 mm Life cycle: 2 years Adults in: May - September Host plant: larval development in decaying wood of both deciduous and coniferous trees Distribution: Europe, Russia, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Turkey, Iran
The mounted specimens were collected in Leuchau environs (Kulmbach district, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany) in summer 1972. The living beetles in the pictures were collected on flowers in: ♀ - Horní Jičany environs (Jesenice, Prague-West district, Central Bohemia, Czechia) on June 27, 2009; ♂♂ - Počátky-Nemojov environs (Chotěboř, Havlíčkův Brod district, Vysočina region, Czechia) on June 15, 2019 and in Spišská Nová Ves-Novoveská Huta environs (Spišská Nová Ves district, Košice region, Slovakia) on June 24, 2017.Collected by Udo Schmidt, Daniel Rydzi and Michal Hoskovec
