Xylotrechus (Xylotrechus) hircus, a North-Asian species distributed in China, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan and Russia, has been described from Siberia as Clytus hircus by Friedrich August Gebler in 1825 [✳]. Larvae of X. hircus develop in weakened, dying or freshly dead birch (Betula spp.) branches and twigs. Larvae feed subcortically and later in wood, create galleries filled by fine frass. After the second overwintering they create a pupal cell in the upper wood layer at the end of the larval gallery. Life-cycle 2 years, adults are active from June to early August and can be fouind on dying, uprooted or felled host trees [❖].
